You lovely lovely lovely people.
You lovely lovely lovely people listen to crap music!!
Alright, perhaps I'm being a tad judgemental, however, I am rather saddened by the lack of musical taste my generation has been showing lately. But I digress.
But Julia, what makes you so sure of your own musical taste's superiority? Well, my friend, as the daughter of a sound engineer (really, I've got a recording studio in my basement), I would say that my taste in music is rather like that of a gourmet's taste in food: BETTER THAN YOURS.
But again, I digress.
I am on this self-serving, music-centric rant simply because my generation has been groomed to like music that's been made by someone famous and "hot" and was produced in an overly-expensive studio by a "hot" producer. Lyrical value? Pshhh not important. Audio quality? Pah, meaningless. Legit musical talent? Bahahahaha.
As opposed to most people my age who listen to music based on its popularity, whether or not they actually like they way it sounds. Now, I'm not saying that I despise popular music, because that's not true, I despise popular music that is popular for the sake of being popular.
I like music that sounds like it was well-mastered, smoothly edited, and produced with more in mind than cash and club-bangers. I listen to artists with legitimate musical talent, such as the ability to sing without auto-tune (Katy Perry, you lack this. T-Pain, without auto-tune you, my friend, are just speaking into a mic) or play guitar really well (The Edge, without your effects boxes and guitar synths, you are nothing, you hear me, nothing!) I enjoy genres that are [unfortunately] bloated with posers, but commit myself to weeding out the true visionaries from the assholes who like fame.
The majority of my generation, on the other hand, wouldn't know what good editing and real talent sounded like if it were blasted in their faces. It's incredibly frustrating for musical zealots like me to watch artists such as Bruno Mars, who can barely play piano, writes none of his own songs, and sings every song in the same octave become overhyped when artists such as Phoenix, who play all of their own instruments, shun vocal editing, and write independantly of their label get pushed to the back burner.
Sighhh.
I'm a generally tolerant person and I'm open-minded to new things. But I can't tolerate the complete fail-whale my generation has become when it comes to music :(
Crsshhhh schrsshhhhk (the sound that radio static makes)
Julia
this saddens me, :/ i mean i appreciate good music, i know about octaves, read music, and understand what makes interesting complicated music.
ReplyDeletebut surely, sometimes the simplest of music can connect to people, sure bruno mars isnt artistically fantastic but people can relate to his music,
in a way, that connects to people like the beatles, (as much as it kills me to compare bruno mars to the beatles)
but i could atleast write the same guitar pieces george harrison did, it's not outstandingly complicated. it was just relevent to the time, hense why it's regarded so highly.
music is a way to make people escape, something they can enjoy, regardless of what it sounds like :) isn't that all that matters regardless of whether it's manufactured shite or not? :)
and as much as i like phoenix ;) they sound just like every other indie band :P
sorry to go on :D
<3
haha, i knew you'd comment on this daniel! cause if you didn't i was going to. i agree wholeheartedly :)
ReplyDeleteI guess I can see from both view points ( the blog's and the comments).
ReplyDeleteYeah it pisses me off when bands/artists get popular these days for just being popular, not for possessing any real form of actual talent... like say Justin Beiber/Bieber/I really don't care how it's spelt. Sure I can rag on the guy like everyone else does, but I do respect him to an extent in that he's made his way in the world by (arguably I guess) himself. I just wish I didn't have to HEAR him making his way in the world.
On the other side, I cannot. stand. his music. To me it screams generic-ness and conformity. There is nothing in his song/s that has not been done before by a zillion other acts. I mean one of his first singles was called 'Baby', and his first album is called 'My Worlds'... *head asplodes*.
OK maybe I did end up ragging on the Bieb, but whatever.
But yes, music is a form of art, and like art, there are no boundaries, there are no rules, regulations etc. There is, essentially, no 'right' or 'wrong' way to write/sing a song. It can be simple or complicated, unique or remixed, but it is still, in essence, music. And someone, somewhere out there, is going to like it.
Unfortunately.
